Everything is beholden to the universal law of opposites as the world is made up of ordered opposite tendencies such as hot-cold, push-pull, young-old, tall-short, rich-poor neutron-electron, inner-outer. These opposites happen at every level from the formation of a galaxy right down to the atom. A group of sages in ancient China, called Taoists, adopted this law of opposites into their philosophy, science and medicine. They discovered that their Universe was made of a life force which in its expanding phase was called ‘Yang’ and when it reached its limit it changed into a contracting force, entitled  ‘Yin’.

These Yin Yang principles were used successfully for millennia by Chinese scientists and doctors whose collective knowledge, from thousands of years of experience, was assembled in the sixteenth century A.D. by Li Shih-chen who compiled the The Great Pharmacopoeia ( Pen-ts’ao kang-mu ).

Li Shih-chen’s opus was adopted by George Oshawa who formed his Shokuyo or ‘macrobiotic’ system popularised by Michio Kushi in the 1970’s. Oshawa and Kushi laid out a balance of foods and diet with resulted in George Oshawa being cured of TB and other diseases in 1908 by using these Yin Yang principles. This traditional way of healing and balancing diet landed in Japan from China over many centuries which Oshawa practiced successfully for over fifty years. Also Shintoism is a Japanese hybrid of Taoism and Buddhism which has the Yin Yang principles at its core. A Yin Yang diet is about the right balance relative to lifestyle, gender, environment and even personality and when the body is balanced it can fight off unwanted threats more effectively.
